China's driverless-car ambitions have arrived on British roads. Baidu's Apollo Go has begun robotaxi road testing in London, and it is doing so with both of ride-hailing's biggest names at once — Uber and Freenow by Lyft. Baidu says the deployment marks the first time a Chinese autonomous vehicle has operated in the UK capital's notoriously complex traffic, and it lands amid a broader push that also delivered Apollo Go its first fully driverless permit in Hong Kong.

What Is Actually on the Road

Testing with Freenow by Lyft kicks off in Brent, a borough in west and northwest London, using Apollo Go's sixth-generation RT6 vehicle across a mix of urban and suburban routes. Uber confirmed that Apollo Go vehicles are now operating on public roads in the city as well. For now, safety operators remain on board, and neither partner is carrying paying passengers yet.

Public rides, Apollo Go and Freenow say, will not begin until 2027, subject to regulatory approval. In other words, London is watching a careful validation phase, not a commercial launch — a reminder that even mature autonomous systems face a long runway of local testing before they can charge fares in a new market.

Two Rivals, One Autonomy Stack

The most striking feature of the London rollout is that Uber and Lyft, who compete fiercely almost everywhere, are both leaning on the same Chinese autonomy stack to get driverless cars onto their platforms. The arrangement stems from two separate deals Baidu signed in 2025. The Lyft partnership is intended to scale thousands of Apollo Go vehicles across key European markets, while Uber has spent more than $10 billion building robotaxi partnerships rather than developing the technology itself.

The result is an unusual dynamic: Baidu now sits on both sides of the Uber-versus-Lyft fight, supplying the autonomous hardware and software that each platform needs. It is a vivid illustration of how autonomy is reshuffling the ride-hailing industry, turning former pure-play tech rivals into customers of the same supplier.

For Baidu, the London arrangement is also a template for international expansion. Rather than building its own consumer-facing service in every new country — an expensive, regulation-heavy undertaking — the company can plug its proven RT6 fleet into local platforms that already command riders, brand trust, and regulatory relationships. That asset-light model of exporting the autonomy stack, not the ride-hailing operation, may prove far more scalable than the market-by-market approach Western rivals have pursued.

A Milestone Week Beyond London

The London deployment coincided with a technical proof point in Hong Kong. On July 23, the city's Transport Department granted Apollo Go Hong Kong's first fully driverless trial permit, and the trial began July 27 on Airport Island with no safety operator on board. Baidu describes it as the first fully driverless Level 4 trial in any right-hand-drive market — a category that includes both Hong Kong and the UK, and one that has historically lagged left-hand-drive regions in autonomous deployment.

The scale behind these expansions is considerable. Apollo Go says it had completed 22 million rides globally by April 2026, including 3.2 million fully driverless rides in the first quarter alone, and its fleet has logged more than 136 million driverless miles.

Why It Matters

London is one of the world's most demanding driving environments — dense, historic, and governed by cautious regulators. Proving an autonomous system there, in a right-hand-drive setting, is a meaningful validation of how far Chinese robotaxi technology has traveled. It also plants a Chinese autonomy provider directly in a flagship Western market, deepening a competitive contest that until recently was framed largely as Waymo versus everyone else. Alphabet's Waymo has itself been testing in London through a partnership with Moove.

For the ride-hailing giants, the calculus is strategic. By outsourcing the hardest part of autonomy to a proven operator, Uber and Lyft can move faster and hedge their bets — but they also cede control of the core technology to a partner that serves their rival too. That trade-off will define the next phase of the industry.

For riders and regulators, the near-term reality is more grounded: safety drivers stay behind the wheel, data gets collected, and approvals are earned street by street. The robotaxi future is arriving in London — just on a timeline measured in years, not months.
