ChatGPT answers are no longer just text. OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 across ChatGPT on October 7, 2026, together with a capability called Intelligent UI that lets the assistant respond with interactive elements such as charts, buttons, forms, maps and mini-calculators directly inside the conversation. Paid plans got it first, and Free and Go users receive it from today, October 8. This guide explains what changes, which model you are using and how to get the most out of interactive answers.

What Intelligent UI Actually Does

Instead of always returning paragraphs, GPT-6 can decide that a question is better answered with something you can tap, drag or adjust. OpenAI's launch examples include:

  • A cooking timeline shown alongside a recipe.
  • Road-trip stops plotted on an interactive map.
  • Diagrams explaining how a bicycle or an aeroplane wing works.
  • Adjustable inputs for learners, plus on-demand tools such as savings calculators, bill splitters and simple in-chat games.

The format adapts to the request: a comparison may appear side by side, an explanation may become an interactive diagram, and a simple question still gets a plain text answer. Under the hood, OpenAI built a component library and a compiler that renders the interface while the response is still streaming, so parts appear before the answer finishes. Product manager Aarush Selvan told TechCrunch that the most helpful answers are not always just text when people are trying to learn something or get a daily task done.

Which Model Are You Getting?

The rollout covers the everyday Chat experience, not OpenAI's separate Work or Codex models:

  • Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise: GPT-6 Sol, tuned for everyday conversation.
  • Free and Go: GPT-6 Luna, a lighter model in the same family.
  • Enterprise: availability can depend on administrator settings.

GPT-6 replaces the "Latest" option in the model picker. If you want to compare answers, you can still switch back to GPT-5.6 Sol from the picker.

How to Start Using It

1. Update and check the picker

Open ChatGPT on the web or update the mobile app, then confirm that GPT-6 is selected as your default. If you do not see it yet, the rollout is staged and should arrive within the day for Free and Go accounts.

2. Ask questions that benefit from visuals

Intelligent UI triggers when the model judges that an interactive answer will help. You will see it most with:

  • Comparisons: "Compare these three phone plans for a family of four."
  • Calculations: "Help me work out how long it takes to save 5 lakh rupees at different monthly amounts."
  • Planning: "Plan a three-day road trip from Pune to Goa with stops."
  • Learning: "Explain how compound interest works and let me adjust the rate."

3. Ask explicitly when you want a tool

If ChatGPT replies in text but you wanted something interactive, say so: ask it to "turn this into a calculator," "show this as a chart I can adjust" or "make a checklist I can tick off."

4. Tune the visual intensity

TechCrunch reports you can adjust how visual responses are, much like other ChatGPT personalisation settings. Android Headlines describes Intelligent UI as optional, so you can dial it back if you prefer text.

Other Improvements in the Update

Alongside the new interface, Android Headlines reports that web search answers are 44% faster and that responses now stream in real time while the model is still reasoning. OpenAI also says it ran alignment evaluations throughout training and that GPT-6 is better at recognising and communicating the limits of its own capabilities.

Tips and Limitations

  • Verify the numbers. A polished calculator is only as accurate as the assumptions behind it. Ask ChatGPT to show the formula, and double-check financial or health figures with an authoritative source.
  • Expect rough edges. OpenAI itself acknowledges that the model's design judgement and the range of interfaces it can build still need work.
  • Do not overshare. Interactive forms may invite you to type in details; avoid entering sensitive personal or financial identifiers.
  • Fall back to text when needed. For copy-paste workflows, ask for a plain-text or bulleted version.

Why It Matters

With more than 1.2 billion weekly users, according to OpenAI, ChatGPT's shift from text to generated interfaces could change what people expect from AI assistants: not just an explanation, but a small purpose-built app on demand. For students, interactive diagrams make complex topics easier to explore. For everyday tasks such as budgeting, trip planning and shopping comparisons, a tappable tool beats scrolling through paragraphs. Expect rivals to respond quickly with their own generative interfaces.
