Electric-vehicle giant BYD is stepping into the humanoid-robot race, confirming that its first humanoid — nicknamed "Xiao Di" — will debut in August at the company's Di Space experience centres. The move places the Shenzhen carmaker alongside a swelling field of Chinese manufacturers racing into embodied artificial intelligence, and sharpens an emerging rivalry with Tesla's Optimus programme.

A Service Robot Built for the Showroom

Unlike the factory-floor humanoids that have dominated headlines this year, BYD is positioning Xiao Di as a service robot aimed at customer-facing environments. According to reports citing a since-deleted BYD post, the robot stands 1.61 metres tall, weighs 58.5 kilograms and carries 31 degrees of freedom across its body. It is also said to translate in real time between six Chinese dialects and six foreign languages — a capability tailored to greeting and guiding visitors rather than lifting parts. BYD has not officially confirmed those specifications.

The debut venue is telling. Di Space is BYD's network of immersive brand venues, positioned as new-energy science centres rather than dealerships. The first site, in Zhengzhou, spans four floors and roughly 15,000 square metres, functioning as a launch pad for new technologies, with further venues in Tianjin and other cities. BYD has signalled the reveal will be interactive rather than a spec-sheet affair. "It won't show up with a pile of specs and jargon," one teaser read. "Maybe when you walk closer, it moves slightly."

The Strategy Behind the Robot

BYD's push follows heavy investment in artificial intelligence. In June, executive vice-president Stella Li said the company had made "a huge investment in AI" and related technologies, including humanoid robotics. The groundwork runs deeper still: BYD set up a dedicated team in late 2024 to develop embodied-AI products under its 15th Business Division.

The near-term deployment is unmistakably commercial. Li said she hopes every BYD store will eventually host two or three robots to introduce and demonstrate vehicles to customers, and expects robot sales advisors to be ready for real-world use within the next year or two. She was careful to add that robots cannot replace the emotional connection between human salespeople and buyers — framing Xiao Di as an assistant, not a replacement.

Why It Matters

BYD's entry signals that the humanoid wave is no longer confined to specialist robotics firms. Automakers are converging on humanoids because the underlying technologies — perception, actuation, battery systems and on-board computing — overlap heavily with what they already build for electric cars. That shared foundation lets carmakers move quickly and at scale.

The timing also reflects business pressure. BYD's core car operation is strained, with first-half sales down about 16 percent amid China's brutal domestic price war. A credible new growth story in robotics offers investors a fresh narrative at a difficult moment.

The competitive picture is crowded:

  • Tesla remains the headline rival with Optimus, though its Fremont production timeline has slipped through mid-2026.
  • Xpeng is trialling its second-generation Iron humanoid, targeting mass production by year-end.
  • Chery's Aimoga is already selling to consumers, and Li Auto is exploring designs.

A Note of Caution

BYD has been unusually direct about tamping down speculation. In June, a detailed account circulated describing a project codenamed Yao Shun Yu — a seventh-generation prototype supposedly undergoing field tests, with around 150 units already working and a target of 20,000 internal deployments in 2026. BYD rejected each of those claims specifically, calling the codename, the field tests and both unit figures untrue, while confirming that humanoid development is genuinely under way.

That candour matters in a sector prone to hype. Industry trackers this month show real momentum elsewhere — Figure's third-generation robot passing 1,000 units, AgiBot at 15,000 cumulative, and Boston Dynamics shipping electric Atlas units to partners — but also a persistent gap between demonstrations and durable, at-scale deployment. As a relative latecomer, BYD will be measured not by the polish of its August reveal but by whether Xiao Di can reliably work a showroom floor day after day.

For now, the debut adds one of the world's largest EV manufacturers to the humanoid contest, and reinforces a broader truth about 2026: the race to build useful embodied AI is increasingly being run by the companies that already know how to mass-produce complex machines.
